A few years ago I made the Plot Dot (now free on Amazon!) – my simple 8 step outline for writing novels, with the major dramatic twists most stories need to hit. I always wanted a more in-depth plotting outline and cheatsheet, but there’s so many conflicting story structures out there this week however, I managed to put together a 24 step chapter outline for commercial fiction. In Story Structure Architect, Victoria Schmidt re-interprets Polti’s list of dramatic situations, bringing the total up to 55 and updating the descriptions as well as the examples. Writing a mystery novel is challenging. It demands a keen sense for plot, characterization and creating suspense. A story that actively engages readers in solving the mystery (or in trying to piece together the narrative threads) needs at least 7 elements. And what I have learned is that there is an inherent story structure to novels, indeed to all stories. They are described differently by different people, but the inherent structure is the same. The three-act structure is a type of story structure: Act I: Set-Up. Act II: Struggle. Act III: Resolution. All stories will follow that format. lol Good point! If you want a book that goes into detail about story structure, this book is not for you. The one thing about it, he does warn you what type of book this is upfront.
I do recommend this book if you want an introduction or a refresher on story structure. This book was highly informative given its directness/5. Nevertheless, Story Trumps Structure is a great book for learning how to develop narrative force in your story.
